Ive always had a soft spot for the original design Mini. It played a part in my childhood and also my youth. Back in the 80s and 90s it seemed like just about everyone had one. Cheap, fun and good-looking little machines. Id love to add reliable to that particular list, however they had various issues.

One of our family favourites was the Mini Countryman. This was the stretched estate version from the classic salon shape. It also had the later 1275 Clubman style front. Lots of changes from the original, however it still somehow appeared as if a Mini.

Did we love our old Countryman since it was a nice looking car? Well, no not really. We loved it because unlike the saloon version, we could acquire some luggage in it and go away for that weekend in relative comfort.

So, now here we are, some 3 decades on and the Mini Countryman is making its come back. When I first saw the car, I figured Oh no, what have they done! It was like exploring the Minis ugly brother that were hidden away for years.

After the initial shock wore off I reminded myself of history and the original Mini Countryman which we had loved a lot. This helped me awaken to the extra practicality this model gives, combined with statement and elegance of the Mini brand (now a part of BMW).

Although this model wisely passes on the faux wood trim from the old classic, still it supports the rugged, ready for action look on the highway.

How does it drive then? Well as you would expect it is a different class towards the original. In fact we were driving it for 2 weeks and there was no rust! Something that you wouldnt have been in a position to say with full confidence on the original car.

In these modern days it is usually fairer to compare it to love priced cars such as the Volkswagen Golf. When you get slightly better class trim in the VW you wont be making exactly the same statement. Which means you are really trading style for finish when it comes to these cars.

Even though it is not up to the aggressive driving abilities of its saloon cousin, its very capable. Then chances are you will not be driving it hard anyway as it will in all probability be purchased by families.

I needed to hate this car, but ended up loving it. Im still not sure from the looks, but it does some how manage to capture the essence from the original. A household worker, that also brings a smile to your face. Worth a look in my opinion.
